About Me

Martin Wood
I'm a Dorset birder who's been hooked since I was about thirteen. Most of my birding life has been spent within 10 miles of home , mainly Longham Lakes ( my local patch ), Lytchett Fields, and Poole Harbour area I'm the bloke who found the county's first Scarlet Darter Dragonfly, ( I know blowing my own trumpet), who once got a White-tailed Eagle fly right over my head at Longham lakes ( and somehow managed to get the phot that's now my blog header), and who still gets stupidly excited about a new patch tick after all these years. In 2026 I've decided to do something a bit challenging : a full -on Dorset Big Year. Target is 200 species, but secretly I would like to smash the county record. I'll be out in all weathers, from pre-dawn ( that's if I can get up mind) Lytchett Fields wader hunts to gale-lashed Portland sea-watch, and everything in between. I'm not the worlds greatest writer (as anyone who read my old post will confirm! ) , but I'll try and keep this blog updated with honest day-to-day accounts running totals, photos, and the odd triumphant rant when a White rump Sandpiper shows up at Longham or a Baird's Sandpiper at Lytchett fields shows up.
